Self Propelled Forage Harvesters

The self-propelled forage harvester is a complex and expensive piece of machinery for a producer to own. Today's largest machines have engines producing up to 1,100 horsepower (820 kW), are fitted with headers able to cut up to a 35-foot (11 m) swath of corn in a single pass, and an output exceeding 400 tons of silage per hour. Main components of a harvesters are: feedrolls, metaldetector, drum, cornknives, shearbar, sharping stone, blower, and spout. The options you can choose from are: central lubrication / autolube, inoculant system, kernel processor, GPS, spout camera, rear view camera, 4 wheeldrive, rear view camera, extra weight, air conditioning.

Self-propelled forage harvesters are used to make feed for livestock, the so called silage or fodder. Producers prefer forage made with these machines because they are able to deliver a feed value that enables improved productivity of their animals in terms of milk production for dairy animals and weight gain for beef animals. They are able to make a variety of feed from different crops, corn, maize, alfalfa, sorghum, grass, canola, elephant grass, oats, wheat including whole-plant corn silage, earlage, and haylage, among others.

      Kernel Processors:

Forage harvesters can be equipped with kernel processors to improve the digestibility of hard, mature kernels in corn silage. Kernel processors are counter-rotating rollers that are intended to crack corn kernels as they pass from the cutterhead to the blower. Corn will sometimes get too mature in the field. One of the biggest problems with mature corn is that the corn kernels get hard (you can no longer break them with your fingernail) and less digestible (the kernels pass through the cow and show up in the manure). Researchers have reported that as much as 25% of the corn kernels in corn silage may pass out of the cow in the manure. That is energy that will be fed to wild turkeys in the field rather than being used for milk production!

Kernel processors (KP), modules consisting of two mill rolls with teeth pressed together by powerful springs, are frequently used when harvesting cereal crops like corn and sorghum to crack the kernels of these plant heads. Kernel processors are installed between the cutterhead and accelerator. In most forage harvesters, the KP can be quickly removed and replaced with a grass chute for chopping non-cereal crops. The length of the chopped forage is important, and corn kernels and stalk sections need to be cracked open otherwise they pass through the animal undigested. The patented Shredlage system from Claas has been shown to create better silage. This is basically a pair of grooved rollers 2mm apart that rotate at different speeds so the chopped material that passes between them is torn and shredded. The two silver-coloured rollers that crack the corn kernels and stalks to create better silage. There are kernel crackers on different brands of machines that do a similar job.
